Overview

North Wales is castle country. Along its coast, the medieval fortresses of King Edward I still stand over the walled towns that grew up around them, from Caernarfon on the Menai Strait to Conwy at the mouth of the River Conwy. Old stone, harbors full of moored boats, and the hills of Eryri (Snowdonia) rising behind them give you something to point a camera at in every direction, whether you're up on the battlements or down in the narrow streets.

The light is a big part of the place. Soft, overcast skies are common here, and inside the castles the light drops off fast, from bright window slits to dark stairwells and passages. That mix of flat daylight and deep shadow makes North Wales a good test of how a film holds a wide range of tones, especially black and white. This page gathers the frames made across the region, from the castles to the towns around them.
